The house rules
Last updated 12 October 2026
The short version. Covers is a free app for reading with friends and running a book club. Be kind: no abusive, hateful, sexual, threatening or unlawful posts. Anything can be reported and anyone can be blocked. Take sensible care when you meet people. Nothing here takes away rights the law says you always have.
1. The agreement
Covers is made by SPENCER AI (ABN 31 978 335 623), Victoria, Australia ("we", "us"). These terms are an agreement between you and us about the Covers app and this website ("Covers"). By using Covers you agree to them and to our privacy policy. If you don't agree, please don't use Covers.
You must be 16 or older to use Covers. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian should read these terms with you.
2. What Covers is, and the price
Covers lets you track your reading, follow friends' reading, and start or join a book club with a QR code. Your library lives on your phone. Club posts and shared reading travel between members through Apple's iCloud, as our privacy policy explains.
Covers is free. There are no in-app purchases or subscriptions. If that ever changes, we'll tell you first, and you'll only pay for something you choose to buy through the App Store.
3. Club rules
Covers has zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive behaviour. Anywhere in Covers, don't post or do anything that:
- is abusive, bullying, harassing, threatening, hateful or discriminatory;
- is sexually explicit, or sexualises anyone under 18;
- promotes violence, self-harm or anything illegal;
- shares someone's private information, such as their address, without their permission;
- is spam, advertising or a scam, or impersonates someone;
- infringes copyright or other rights. Short quotes for discussion are fine; long extracts or whole chapters are not;
- breaks the law where you or other members are.
Only show your codes to people you'd invite, and only scan codes from people you know.
4. Reporting, blocking and removal
- Report: tap ⋯ beside anything someone else posts, or on their membership card, and choose Report. A post is hidden on your phone straight away, and an email to us opens with the details. Send it and we'll review it.
- Block: choose Block to hide everything that person posts. Unblock in Settings.
- Leave or remove: anyone can leave a club at any time, and founders can remove members.
We aim to act on every report within 24 hours. We may delete content that breaks these rules from the Covers iCloud database, and take any other step open to us to stop someone who breaks them.
5. Meeting in person
Covers helps people who know each other meet. We don't check who anyone is and we aren't part of your meetings. You're responsible for your own safety and conduct. Only share an address with people you trust, and hosts are responsible for their own homes and venues.
6. Your content
What you write and score in Covers is yours. You let us, and the people you share with, store, copy and show it in Covers so the app can work. That permission ends when the content is deleted, except for copies already on other members' phones. You're responsible for what you post and confirm you have the right to post it.
7. Your licence, and what's ours
We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use Covers on Apple-branded devices you own or control, as the App Store Usage Rules allow (including Family Sharing). Please don't copy, sell or redistribute Covers, reverse-engineer it except where the law allows, misuse the iCloud database it uses, or use it to break the law or harm anyone.
The Covers app, artwork, characters and text belong to us or are used with permission. Book titles, authors and cover art belong to their owners. Book details found by barcode come from Open Library.
8. Your data
Your library is stored on your phone, not with us, so we can't recover it if your phone is lost or reset or the app is deleted. Keep your phone backed up, or use Moving to a new phone in Settings to export a copy.
9. Your consumer rights
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes any consumer guarantee, right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that can't be excluded. If you live outside Australia, your local consumer law may give you rights these terms can't take away. Every part of these terms applies only to the extent permitted by law.
10. Limits on our responsibility
To the extent permitted by law, and subject to section 9:
- we provide Covers as it is and as available, and may change, pause or stop it;
- we aren't responsible for what other members post or do, in the app or in person, or for services run by others, including iCloud and Open Library;
- we aren't liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for lost data or reading records;
- our total liability to you for anything to do with Covers is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for Covers in the 12 months before the claim, or AUD $50.
None of this limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't let us limit.
11. Problems and complaints
If something goes wrong, email welcome@myspencer.ai and we'll try to sort it out quickly. You can also contact a consumer protection agency or regulator, or go to a court or tribunal, at any time.
12. Apple
- These terms are between you and us, not Apple. We, not Apple, are responsible for Covers and its content.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for maintenance and support. Apple has no obligation to provide any.
- If Covers fails to meet a warranty that applies, you can tell Apple, and Apple may refund the price you paid (Covers is free). To the extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for Covers.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for any claims about Covers, including product liability claims, claims that it fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, consumer protection or privacy claims, and claims that it infringes someone's intellectual property.
- You confirm you are not in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- You must follow any third-party terms that apply when you use Covers, such as your mobile or internet provider's.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
13. General
- Law: these terms are governed by the law of Victoria, Australia. You can also bring a claim where you live if your local law allows it.
- Changes: we may update these terms. We'll change the date above and, for a significant change, tell you in the app first. Changes don't apply to anything that happened before them.
- If part doesn't work: it's cut back only as far as needed, and the rest still applies.
- Transfer: we may transfer these terms to a business that takes over Covers, with your rights unchanged.
