How can we help?
Last updated 12 October 2026
Covers is a free reading and book club app for iPhone. If your question isn't answered here, email us and a real person will read it.
Tell us what you were doing, what happened, and the version shown in Covers under Settings, Version and diagnostics.
Getting started
Do I need an account?
No. There's no sign-up and no password. You pick a name and build a character the first time you open Covers. For club news and shared reading to travel between phones, be signed in to iCloud in your iPhone's Settings.
How do I add a book?
Type the title, photograph the cover, or scan the barcode. Scanning looks the book up on Open Library to fill in the title, author, pages and cover. You can have up to five books in your hand at once.
Can I add books I read before Covers?
Yes. In Settings, under Books I've already read, add them with the month you read them, a score and a sign-off.
Clubs
How do I start or join a club?
To start one, tap Clubs, then start a club, and show your friends its QR code. To join, ask a member to show you the club's code, tap Scan and point your camera at it, or pick a photo of the code.
Who decides the date?
Anyone can suggest a day and say whether they can make it. The next host locks it in and picks who hosts after them. If no one is hosting, the founder does.
When can everyone see my notes?
Your notes are private until the club has met. They open when the night is marked done, or automatically 48 hours after the meeting.
Club news isn't arriving
Check you're signed in to iCloud and that Background App Refresh is on for Covers. Settings in Covers shows whether live sharing is connected. Posts wait on your phone and send when you're back online.
How do I leave a club?
Open the club's settings and choose Leave. Switch on Remove my posts when I leave to take your pins, messages, questions and notes off the club's boards.
Your membership card and fellow members
What does sharing my reading send?
While Share my reading live is on, people who have scanned your card see your card, what's in your hand, your top 10, your pages, books started and finished, scores and sign-offs. Never your notes. Switch it off in Settings at any time.
How do I stop following someone?
Open their card and choose Remove from fellow members, or use Unfollow in Settings, under Your membership card.
I don't want someone following me
In Settings, choose Issue a new membership card. Your old card stops updating for everyone, and the friends you want can scan the new one.
Safety: reporting and blocking
Someone posted something that shouldn't be there
Tap ⋯ beside it and choose Report. It's hidden on your phone straight away and an email to us opens with the details. Send it and we'll review it, aiming to act within 24 hours.
How do I block someone?
Tap ⋯ beside anything they've posted, or open their card, and choose Block. Everything they post is hidden. Unblock them in Settings, under Blocked.
How does a founder remove a member?
In the club's members list, the founder can remove a member, and their posts come off the club's boards.
Calendar, notifications and moving phones
What does calendar sync read?
Only the start and end times of your events, to show your free evenings. Never what the events are, and the times never leave your phone. Stop it in Settings.
How do I change notifications?
Covers Settings has switches for meetings, club activity, fellow members and reading nudges. You can also turn notifications off in your iPhone's Settings.
How do I move to a new phone?
Restore your new iPhone from a backup and Covers comes with it. Or in Settings choose Moving to a new phone, then Export my Covers, and open the file on the new phone with Import a file.
Can you recover my library?
No. Your library is on your phone, not with us. Keep your phone backed up, or export your Covers now and then.
